Core concepts
Where every chart reading begins.
- BodyGraph
- The graphic map of Human Design: 9 centers, 36 channels, 64 gates.
- Personality
- The conscious layer of the chart (black activations). Calculated for the moment of birth.
- Design
- The unconscious layer (red activations). Calculated for the moment when the Sun was 88° earlier.
- Activation
- The position of a celestial body (Sun, Moon, planet, node) in one of the 64 gates.
- Strategy
- The decision-making mechanism specific to each of the 5 types. The most practical guidance in the system.
- Signature
- The positive state that arises when you live by your strategy: Peace / Satisfaction / Success / Wonder.
- Not-Self
- The opposite state: Anger / Frustration / Bitterness / Disappointment. A signal that you have drifted from your path.
- Transit
- The position of the planets right now (not at birth). Transit affects everyone equally but shows up differently depending on the chart.
5 Types
Aura and basic nature.
- Manifestor
- ~9% of people. Closed aura, initiator. Strategy: inform.
- Generator
- ~37%. Open aura, powerful Sacral. Strategy: wait to respond.
- Manifesting Generator
- ~33%. Hybrid: Sacral + motor-to-Throat connection. Strategy: respond, then inform.
- Projector
- ~20%. Focused aura. Strategy: wait for the invitation.
- Reflector
- ~1%. All centers open. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle (28.5 days).
9 Centers
Energy hubs of the body. Each can be "defined" or "open".
- Head (Crown)
- The pressure of inspiration; the desire to understand.
- Ajna
- Conceptualization, mental awareness.
- Throat
- Manifestation — voice, action, expression.
- G Center
- Identity, self-love, life direction.
- Heart (Ego)
- Willpower, material world, commitments.
- Solar Plexus
- Emotional wave, sensitivity.
- Sacral
- Life force, work energy, response.
- Spleen
- Intuition, immunity, survival instinct.
- Root
- Fuel pressure, adaptation.
Center states
Defined or open — half the meaning of the chart.
- Defined center
- Has at least one fully closed channel. Energy is fixed and consistently yours.
- Open center
- No closed channels. Amplifies and reflects others' energy. A source of Not-Self conditioning but, when lived correctly, a place of wisdom.
- Completely open center
- None of the center's gates are activated. The purest "mirror" position in the chart.
- Hanging channel / hanging gate
- One gate is activated; its pair is not. Does not define the center, but creates a sense of "yearning for the other side".
Authorities
The body's mechanism for making decisions.
- Emotional
- Wait for clarity — ride the emotional wave. Never decide at the peak.
- Sacral
- Instant body response of yes/no to a specific question.
- Splenic
- A quiet intuitive signal that sounds only once.
- Ego-Manifested
- The Heart's voice through the Throat: what you say, so it shall be.
- Ego-Projected
- Decisions emerge through dialogue, through the voice.
- Self-Projected
- G center: speak the decision aloud and listen to your own voice.
- Mental (Outer)
- Voice your thoughts in the right environment; don't decide with the mind alone.
- Lunar
- Reflectors only: wait for a full lunar cycle (~28.5 days).
Profile
12 role configurations: Personality Sun line / Design Sun line.
- Line 1 — Investigator
- Needs a foundation of knowledge. Anxiety without grounding.
- Line 2 — Hermit
- Natural talent that emerges through solitude.
- Line 3 — Martyr / Experimenter
- Learns through trial, error, and experiment.
- Line 4 — Opportunist / Friend
- Network person; influence through a close circle.
- Line 5 — Heretic / Savior
- Others project their problem-solving needs onto this person.
- Line 6 — Role Model
- Three life phases: experiment → roof → wise model.
- Profiles
- All 12 combinations — from 1/3 Investigator-Martyr to 6/3.
Channels and gates
The structure of definition in the chart.
- Gate
- One of the 64 I Ching hexagrams, anchored to a center. Activated by one of the 13 celestial bodies.
- Channel
- A pair of gates in different centers. When both are activated the channel closes and both centers become defined.
- Line
- 1–6: subdivision of a gate into 6 equal parts of 0.9375°. Defines the nuance of an activation.
- Color / Tone / Base
- Finer subdivisions of the line (6/6/5 each). Used in advanced analysis and the Variables (PHS) system.
Definition and cross
How many "islands" exist in the chart, and what is the overarching life theme.
- Definition
- How many connected "islands" the defined centers form: Single / Split / Triple / Quadruple / No definition.
- Incarnation Cross
- 4 gates: Sun/Earth of Personality + Sun/Earth of Design. The overarching theme and life purpose.
- Right Angle
- ~70%. Personal fate — learning through one's own experience.
- Juxtaposition
- ~2%, profile 4/1 only. Fixed fate, a very narrow role.
- Left Angle
- ~28%. Transpersonal fate — lived through encounters with others.
Compatibility and transit
Dynamics through time and in relationships.
- Composite
- The couple's chart: the union of two charts, analyzed for the channels that emerge.
- Electromagnetic channel
- Each partner holds one gate of the channel — the most magnetic dynamic.
- Dominance
- Both partners hold both halves of the channel. Often produces competition.
- Companionship
- Both hold the same gates. A shared language.
- Compromise
- One partner has the full channel; the other has half. A source of growth and friction.
