Open Solar Plexus: why you feel others' emotions twice as strongly

If your Solar Plexus is undefined, you have no emotional wave of your own — but you pick up everyone else's and amplify it. This is not "being an emotional person." It is being an emotional mirror.

Around half of all people live with an undefined Solar Plexus. If you are one of them, you have almost certainly heard someone say "you're such an emotional person, calm down." Most likely, it wasn't your emotion.

What "undefined" means

In Human Design, a center is considered defined when it has at least one fully closed channel (both gates of the channel are activated). If not — the center is undefined. An undefined center is not empty — it is a mirror. It amplifies energy coming from outside, usually by a factor of two.

This applies to all nine centers, but the Solar Plexus is especially noticeable because emotion is one of the most physically felt energies.

What a person with an undefined SP feels

The basic pattern: near someone emotional, you become more intense than they are. If someone nearby is anxious, you are more anxious than them. If someone is angry, you are hit by a wave of anger. If someone is euphoric, you are swept up in delight.

But when you are alone, your "emotional baseline" is calm. That is the single most important thing to know about this center.

Not-Self theme: avoiding truth

An undefined SP creates one very consistent pattern: avoiding conflict and difficult conversations to avoid upsetting anyone. The body's logic is simple — "if the person next to me is upset, I will feel it worse than they do, so it's easier to prevent it."

From the outside this looks like:

  • Not saying what you dislike — so your partner won't be upset.
  • Agreeing when internally it's a "no" — to avoid a scene.
  • Quietly withdrawing instead of openly ending a conversation.
  • Chronic accumulation of the unsaid, which then bursts out at the worst possible moment.

That is the Not-Self theme. Not "you're emotional," but "you avoid truth to avoid amplifying someone else's emotion inside your own body."

The wisdom of an undefined SP

Where this center has a shadow, it also has a gift. A person with an undefined SP accumulates over the years an exceptionally fine-tuned sense of the emotional climate around them. You feel — before any words are spoken — that something shifted in the room. You see through a false "I'm fine" on someone's face. You know when to approach a child who is scared but silent.

This is the wisdom the open center is there for.

What to do in practice

  1. Learn to tell "mine" from "not mine." At every emotional spike, ask yourself: "Was this emotion present when I was alone?" If not — it is not yours.
  2. Leave when you need to. You have no obligation to absorb other people's states. Physically walking out of the room, hanging up, stepping away — all of these are normal.
  3. Say what is true. Paradoxically, avoiding truth → accumulating the unsaid → more emotional charge later. Truth spoken on time means less emotional residue.
  4. Do not make decisions because "otherwise they'll be upset." That is making decisions for the other person, not for yourself.
  5. Find your "emotional mirror." It helps to live or work near emotionally stable people. In an unhealthy environment, an undefined SP depletes quickly.

If your SP is **defined**

Everything is different. You live in your own emotional wave (cycling up and down), and you need a pause before decisions (emotional authority: ride the wave to clarity before acting). But that is material for its own article.
